The puppy placement process.

I get many questions about how our puppies are placed with families. so…….

HOW DO I START THE PROCESS OF BRINGING HOME ONE OF YOUR PUPPIES ?

  1. Go to our Good Dog profile and complete an application to join our waitlist. I will review you application and approve or deny it from there. I may ask clarifying questions before approving your application. the link to that site is listed below.

    https://www.gooddog.com/breeders/cottonwood-corgis-texas

  2. I will begin accepting deposits once puppies turn two weeks old. A deposit will guarantee you will be offered a puppy of your preferred gender. However, I will not be assigning specific puppies to families until the puppies are 7 weeks old. This will give the puppies time to develop their personalities and allow me to better assess which puppy will be the best fit for each family. I will be offering full refunds of deposits should you not like the puppy offered to you for any reason.

  3. ** I would like to note that I will not hold your spot once I start accepting deposits. Meaning, I have contacted you to offer you a spot and take the deposit, but you did not send the deposit by the due date. I will still accept the deposit if there are available spots. It is up to you to be ready to place the deposit by the due date.**

  4. If the puppies are already two weeks old or older at the time that I contact you, a deposit is expected at that time to secure your spot. I do understand that you may need some time to gather your resources. So if you need to wait until payday please send me a message to let me know. I may accept a small partial deposit as long as you are able to place the full deposit within two weeks of my initial message.

  5. I will post weekly pictures of all of the puppies on Facebook and Good Dog. I will try to post pictures on my website as well. However, it is more difficult to upload pictures to the website. So if you do not see new pictures here on this website, please go to Facebook or Good Dog to see the pics.

******Please understand that we do not have a factory able to churn out tons of puppies. We only have a small number of actively breeding females. So, it could take some time before a puppy will become available for you, the wait could be from 3 months to up to a whole year!

ALL PUPPIES WILL NEED TO HAVE A SIGNED AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE BREEDER AND THE PURCHASER.

Please check the documents tab to review our puppy contract. The contract protects both the buyer and the breeder. It states our health guarantee and outlines the choices you will have should a problem arise.

WHAT VACCINES AND MEDICATIONS DO THE PUPPIES RECEIVE

Each puppy will receive their worming medications at 2,4,6, and 8 weeks of age. The puppies receive a multi-vaccine at 5 and 8 weeks old.. The puppies will also be vet checked at 7 weeks old , get their microchips, and will be started on Tri-heart and a topical flea and tick preventive.

PUPPY FOLDERS

I will provide families with a folder for their puppy at pick up. This folder will contain the following items.

  • AKC registration papers

  • shot records and worming records

  • microchip number

  • puppy contract

  • A schedule of when to worm and vaccinate your puppy again

  • A summary print out from the visit with the vet

Puppy Registration

I now prepay registration for each puppy. On pick up day I will still send you the paper application, but will be registering the puppy to you shortly after you leave my house. This means that I will need a registration name to give to your puppy. I will be happy to help you create a registration name if you need help. I’ve become fairly creative at coming up with fancy schmancy name for the little guys. All puppies will receive our kennel name at the beginning of their registered name as well.

CAN WE COME VISIT THE PUPPY ?

Newborn pups are so so susceptible to disease and momma dog may not be happy about visitors with brand spakin new babies in her nest. Not to mention, whelping is very draining on both the Dam and myself. So, initially I will not allow visitors. BUT, after the pups are 4 weeks old and get their first vaccinations , I may allow for a visit if I have room in my schedule. I will be more than happy to have a video call with you to see the puppy and further discuss a possible visit. I can also provide references of past buyers on request if you need those reassurances as well.

** as much as I love meeting new dogs, I cannot allow you to bring any fur-siblings to visit. It would compromise bio-security and I do not think the protective mother dog would appreciate a strange dog near her litter***

DO YOU SHIP PUPPIES ?

***Covid has made air shipping very difficult. I can still ship puppies but the time frame is unpredictable due to airline procedures**

I will ship puppies via airline through United Petsafe or American Airlines. The airlines have climate controlled cabin and your puppy will only be exposed to outside temperatures during transitions. To minimize risk, I cannot ship puppies if the temperature is extreme. If you are located in a northern state, shipping availability in the colder months may affect shipping dates. If you live in a historically hot area, summer temperatures will affect shipping dates. The buyer will be responsible for all shipping cost which are about $500 to $550 ( 75 health certificate for travel + 75 crate + 300- 350 airfare + 50 fuel charge if multiple trips are needed). I will need to receive your payment for the puppy IN FULL before shipping day as well as shipping costs.

Ground Shipping

I can send puppies at 10 weeks via ground shipping. My vet recommends a shipper local to my area called Homeward Bound. The typical cost is around 350 , but you would need to contact the shipper directly for an exact quote. The buyer will be responsible for paying the shipper directly as well as paying for the travel certification for their puppy ($75). The link to Homeward Bound’s Facebook is posted below. Considering the current situation with covid, ground shipping has become the easier more reliable method vs shipping by air.

*** 10/3/22 : Ground shipping rates have greatly increased over the last year. I can help you locate a good transport that is reasonably priced but its going to be more expensive than what I have seen in the past. You can also hire your own shipper if you would prefer**

Boarding puppies after 10 weeks of age

I happily keep puppies after they reach 10 weeks of age with a boarding fee. This can be useful if you would like a certain puppy shipped to you, but need to wait for optimal weather conditions.

Fee Schedule

$65 week for up to 4 weeks

***Please contact me for a price if you will need to board for longer than 4 weeks

Do you dock tails and dewclaws ?

Most puppies will have their tails docked. I do this to be in compliance with AKC breed standard and because some puppies could be show prospects and will need to be docked to be shown.

I will leave some puppies with a natural tail if the puppy seemed too small at birth. I can also leave a natural tail if you contact me in advance. I also have some puppies born with natural bob tails. They can have anywhere from a 3 inch nub tail to a half tail. I usually dock the long bob tailed pups unless the puppy is too small for the procedure.

If I could, I would leave all puppies with their natural tails. I do not like having the procedure done and am partial to the natural tail. However, to my knowledge , there has never been a natural tailed Pembroke Corgi to receive its AKC championship. The odds would be that I would be unsuccessful showing them in their natural state.

I leave front dewclaws intact ** details on why are in the photo gallery below**.

Show judges do not penalize dogs for having front dewclaws. I’ve never had a judge even notice that my dogs have front dews at all. So, I don’t see any advantage to putting the puppies through the pain of removal. I also think there are many benefits to keeping front dew claws anyway.

Almost all puppies are born without rear dewclaws but if a puppy is born with rear dewclaws, I have them removed.

How doyou know I am not a scammer ?

The best way for me to answer that is to outline what red flags to look for.

Typically a scammer will:

  1. have a website called “ cute puppies super cheap” or something of that sort. They do not typically have a kennel name.

  2. Their phone number will not match the city or area they claim to be located in.

  3. they will not have references OR they will pose as their own reference

  4. The pictures of their puppies will not have the same background and where clearly taken in different locations. They will not have pictures of the mother with the puppies, father with the mother, or pictures of puppies as a whole litter. A huge red flag is pictures of individual puppies with a nice collar and a name tag on the collar. Those are usually pictures stolen from someone who just brought home a new puppy and went and bought it a collar and name tag !

  5. Their grammar/ spelling will be poor. I am obviously not a stickler for grammar and spelling, but be on the look out for anyone with especially heinous errors. My personal favorite is when they have full BREAD puppies and constantly mix up genders.

  6. They focus on the individual puppy instead of the parents ( breeders typically are proud of the parents and will highlight them) and will be in a rush to collect a deposit from you

  7. Offers next day to your door shipping

  8. has puppies on DISCOUNT or on sale

  9. If they are charging less than market price for a registered puppy or dog and say shipping included…. you need to be very suspicious. Its probably a scam.

  10. If it sounds too good to be true…. It probably is.

Why can’t i choose my puppy when I placde the deposit ?

I believe it is best to wait until we can determine the base temperament of each puppy before selecting a home for it. At two weeks old, puppies are blind little potatoes with zero personality. So you would be choosing based on markings alone. Those pretty markings won’t make your dog a better fit for your lifestyle. I can guarantee your gender and color of choice though.

even at 7 weeks the puppies will still have lots of maturing to do before we will know their true personalities. However, I believe that at that time, I can determine the most important aspects of their energy level and confidence level. The way I categorize the pups is as follows:

Soft/sensitive Vs Hard/brave

Some puppies scare easily, are more reluctant to try new things, and may need more positive training methods. where as other puppies will try anything, are not scared of anything, but also may be a bit hardheaded. The majority of puppies are somewhere in the middle of that.

low energy Vs. High energy

lets be honest, all these puppies are high energy. Though some of them are higher than average and some of them are just a bit more calm. My line tends to mature to be nice medium energy dog but I’d like to try and place the highest energy pups with active families. I would hate for a active family to end up with a dog who hates going for walks and has to be carried back home. It would also be unfair to place a higher energy pup in a home that would really prefer a couch potato. ** I cant guarantee couch potato status until the puppy has reached 2-3 years though. so be prepared for the first year to be fairly active….they are a herding breed after all.**

Independent Vs Needy

Corgis are generally a breed that needs lots of attention and affection. but some puppies are more comfortable than usual playing by themselves and being chill, while others would prefer to live in you personal space at all times forever. The puppies who prefer to stick to you like a barnacle can be vocal about it too. My line tends to produce velcro dogs (they stick to you). I will sometimes have one or two more independent puppies in each litter. I have found that the pups who are more independent when they are young will mature into dogs who do want your attention but don’t beg for it. The also are less excited about meeting new people and are polite but obviously favor their owners. whereas the most attention hungry of the pups will mature into a “life of the party” kind of dog that will treat all new people as their new best friend.

First time corgi owners will be matched with pups who are very “middle of the road” in terms of personality.
